Skier Support
I just got back from my first trip to Snowshoe in many years. We drove up 219 and saw the signs. I did not write anything down but was able to find this site with a Google search on "slatyfork sewage". I just wanted to let you know that I will not return to Snowshoe if I have to drive by a sewage treatment plant on the Sharp farm.

I love skiing, but I know that ski-related development can be a bad impact on the environment. Indeed, like so many things, I think that short-sighted developers intent only on maximizing profit are LIKELY to trash the environment. I saw little evidence of environmental stewardship at Snowshoe. The only trace I can recall was the typical self-serving "re-use the towels and linens" card in our bathroom. Seemed to flush okay though ;-).

I love the natural world, but I must be honest and admit I love skiing more. I can't say I will only ski at the most environmentally-friendly resorts. I can say that I will not return to one that so callously disregards its neighbors and exploits dirty tricks like eminent domain. I can't imagine taking another flush at Snowshoe knowing what it destroyed. I plan to write a letter to let them know this.

Thanks Jim, please do contact them. In particular, you can contact Snowshoe's General Manager Bill Rock. He is definitely for this plant. Here is his info:

Re: Skier Support
I have been a frequent Snowshoe skier over the years, and my extended family probably spends $4000-5000 per year there for lodging and skiing. If this project goes through, they will lose me as a customer. There are other great choices for skiing in West Virginia, and I'd rather not be supporting an organization like Snowshoe that imposes a burden on the surrounding environment and its neighbors. I can't believe Snowshoe wants to send their waste off-site when they could conceivably deal with it in a smarter and more effective way on the mountain. It's time for Snowshoe to step up and deal with their own problems instead of burdening the local environment, tax base, and community. Quite honestly, I think Snowshoe would probably boost business if they pitched themselves as a green ski resort and started doing the right thing on this and other fronts.

I, too, called Snowshoe after receiving materials in the mail from them and asked to be taken off of their mailing list because I do not do business with thieves. The girl on the phone commented, "I have nothing to do with that." Yeah, she does. She chooses to work for thugs with no regard for the right to private property ownership of their neighbors. I have made it a point to continue to pass the message of what they are trying to do to the Sharp farm to EVERYONE I KNOW, and the result is I personally know of eight people who used to patronize Snowshoe and have vowed to never step foot on the place again if they steal the Sharp farm.

They want a mountain feud? They'll get one.
